NHHS Choir shines at Wynberg Boys Choir Festival

Our Choir participated in the Wynberg Boys High School choir festival which was held in the Cape town City hall this year. It is an annual event and one which has seen our standard mature in the last three years. The standard from all choirs was high and came to a spectacular finale as all eight choirs including the Cape Town male Welsh choir sang on mass for the finale. Well done to our girls and boys under the leadership of Mr. Dirksen.

Choir Festival at Sans Souci

On the 18^th of April the choir attended the Sans Souci Facets Festival of Brilliance art, music and drama, where they represented Norman Henshilwood. The Choir competed against various schools such as, Constantia Waldorf, Wynberg Boys’ Vocal group, Hoërskool Bellville, Zwansvyk and the host, Sans Souci.

The schools each had different styles of music which made it more entertaining to watch. The judges said that they enjoyed the fact that the Norman Henshilwood choir was accompanied by a guitar instead of the traditional piano.

The Choir will be performing at the Wynberg Boys’ choir festival on 16^th of May 2012. Please show your support by purchasing a ticket which will be on sale at the door for R30 for adults and R15 for students.

Public Speaking

On the 7^th of May 2012 Nwabisa Keti (Grade 12) participated in a public speaking competition in Mitchells Plain where she competed against other learners from various schools.

All participants received 5 minutes to deliver a prepared speech. The competition was tough as all the learners had interesting and thought provoking topics. Each participant had to deliver an unprepared speech, which they only had 2 minutes to prepare for.

Thank you to Nwabisa Keti for representing Norman Henshilwood High School and upholding the brand. You did our school proud!

Debating

The Junior and Senior debating teams competed against Fairbairn College on the 17th April. It was a tight competition, but given the fact that neither team had any experience in competitive debating, the teams performed admirably. Both teams had strong arguments which they put forward confidently. The Juniors narrowly lost to Fairbairn College and the Senior team won their debate.Grant Pillay was awarded Best Speaker for the senior competition. Congratulations to the debaters on their debut debate.

Swimming Gala 2012

On the 23 of March 2012 our sports houses Alphen, Constantia, Maynard and Silverhurst competed in the annual swimming gala event. After an exiting morning Silverhurst proved to be the winning team with a score of 168. Afterwards it was the turn of the senior and junior honey and hunks to strut their stuff around the pool. Raffle 2012

The purpose of this year’s draw was to raise funds for an outdoor sports’ centre on West Campus.Our aim as to raise R137 100 and we raised R134 960. We aimed to make a profit of at least

R70 000. Each child was expected to collect R150 on a raffle list. Besides the main prizes we had

incentives and rewards for:
• The individual who brought in the most money (Tahierah Ryklief 8D, 11 lists)
• Individuals who brought in 5 lists or more received a 50% cash back
• The class who brought in the most money (11B – Mr Vardan)
• The grade who brought in the most money (Grade 8- Mrs Miller)

Norman Henshilwood High School, in particular the School Council of Learners, embarked on project whereby various learners (each representing different societies, cultures, and characteristics) are videoed wishing the Staff of NHHS a very Happy Birthday. These videos are played at weekly assemblies, and Staff members are sincerely acknowledged by the school. Videos are filmed, directed and edited by: Kayla Majiet (2012 SC Executive Learner) and Jesrael Jacobs (2012 RCL member).

Mr. David Millar

Our principal David Millar watches a a short video clip presented by the school council, featuring warm wishes, songs and anecdotes by learners and staff. The entire assembly was visibly moved by the celebration. Mr. Millar is 46 years young. The school is very proud of the inspiring relationship we continue to have with him. Happy Birthday Sir!
