Colours Constitution

At Normies, we endeavour to spread the base of recognition, from sporting codes to culture clubs, from service to discipline. Assemblies are held each term and recognition falls into three broad bands:

  1. Achievement: top in each subject and Top 20 in EACH GRADE
  2. Improvement: most improved in each subject
  3. Sport/Culture/Service/Leadership Awards

Two major formal awards’ ceremonies are held at which awards are given to deserving pupils:

  1. Matric Honours Ceremony
  2. Grade 8 – 11 Honours’ Evening.

A Colour’s Constitution guides the Colour’s Committee in awarding colours. Colours are awarded for school codes as well as for non-school codes. Strict criteria are applied so that colours are for excellence in achievement across ACADEMICS, SERVICE, OLYMPIADS, CULTURE and SPORT.

COLOURS CONSTITUTION (HONOURS)

The following policy has the following motivation:

  1. Recognition of achievement
  2. Motivation of achievers and potential achievers
  3. To widen the spectrum of possible achievers

The following rule/s applies:

  1. The Constitution will be the only document that will be used to determine the awarding of colours. A Colours’ Committee consisting of the following people will meet quarterly to grant awards and annually to amend the constitution: Principal; Head of Academics/ Sport/Service/ Culture; TWO members of the RCL; TWO members of the MCL; Head of all Sporting Codes/ Cultural Activities.
  2. Learners who have been granted colours may have their colours stripped for misconduct. This will be done at the discretion of the school’s Board of Governors, in consultation with the parent/s and learner/s concerned.
  3. Wef 2016 parents are responsible for the cost carried by the awarding of colours to their child/ren e.g. blue blazer.
  4. Learners who are chosen to represent Western province/Western Cape/South Africa may wear their blazers on Mondays and their school Honour’s blazer for the rest of the week.

ACADEMIC HONOURS POLICY

1. Academic Honours Policy

1.1 Preamble

  • Academic Colours are awarded on the promotion mark only in grades 8, 9, 10 and 11 and are presented at the whole school Honours’ Evening in December each year.
  • In Grade 12 Academic Honours are awarded based on the year mark and are awarded at the Annual Honours’ morning.
  • In addition to the criteria below, a learner must pass ALL 7 subjects in Grades 10 to 12 and ALL 9 learning areas in Grades 8 and 9 to qualify for colours.

1.2. Categories and Critieria

1.2.1 Honours Gold

[a] Grades 8 and 9: a learner achieving an average percentage 80% with a minimum of 6 code 7s [over 80%]

[b] Grades 10 to 12: a learner achieving an average percentage of 80% with a minimum of 5 code 7s [over 80%]

[c] Dress code: [i] navy blue blazer with gold braiding and an academic scroll [ gold braiding] + bar badge [ii] navy blue tie [academic in [gold] [iii] sky blue jersey.

1.2.2 Honours Silver

[a] Grades 8 and 9: a learner achieving an average percentage of 80% with a minimum of 4 code 7s [over 80%]

[b] Grades 10 to 12: A learner achieving an average percentage of 80% with a minimum of 4 code 7’s [over 80%]

[c] Dress code: [i] Navy blue blazer with silver braiding and an academic scroll [silver braiding] + bar badge [ii] navy blue tie [academic in silver]

1.2.3 Honours Bronze

[a] Grades 8 and 9: a learner achieving an average percentage of 75% with a minimum of 3 code 7s [over 80%]

[b] Grades 10 to 12: a learner achieving an average percentage of 75% with a minimum of 3 code 7s [over 80%]

[c] Dress Code: [i] Cherry red blazer with red/white braiding and an academic scroll [white plain] + bar badge

2. Sports Honours' Policy

2.1 Preamble

  • School Sports are as follows: Athletics; Chess; Cricket; Cross-Country; Hockey; Netball; Soccer; Softball; Swimming; Rugby; Volleyball.
  • Non-school sports will be recognized [at the discretion of the Colours’ Committee] e.g. karate/squash/gymnastics

2.2. Categories and Critieria

2.2.1 Honours Gold

[a] Selected to represent a sport at International level.

[b] Top 3 places at a South African Championships [any sport]

[c] Dress code: [i] Navy blue blazer with gold braiding and a sport scroll [gold braiding] + bar badge [ii] navy blue tie [sport in gold] [iii] sky blue jersey.

2.2.2 Honours Silver

[a] Selected to represent a sport at provincial level Western Province A team OR only team e.g. Angling/Western Cape/ SA Development team.

[b] Dress code: [i] Navy blue blazer with silver braiding and a sport scroll [silver braiding] + bar badge [ii] navy blue tie [sport in silver].

2.1.1 Honours Bronze

[a] Selected to represent a sport at local level [District] OR winning a league OR Victor/Victrix Ludorum [Junior/ Senior] at Inter-House championships OR Winning House Captains [annual]

[b] Dress code: [i] Cherry red blazer with white/red braiding and a sport scroll [white plain] + bar badge

3. Leadership/Service Honours' Policy

3.1 Preamble

Leadership/ Service Honours are based on the following criteria:

[a] Serving as an RCL/ MCL member during the year

[b] Being elected to the School Council Executive Committee

[c] Service to the community [at the discretion of the Board of Governors/ School Leadership]

[d] Serving on the Junior City Council

3.2. Categories and Critieria

3.2.1 Honours Gold

[a] Elected as the Chairperson of School Council OR as JCC Mayor

[b] Dress code: [i] Navy blue blazer with gold braiding and a leadership scroll [gold braiding] [ii] a navy blue tie [ leadership in gold] [iii] sky blue jersey.

3.2.2 Honours Silver

[a] Elected as an Executive Member of the School Council [elected by peers]; Deputy Chairperson; Vice-Chairperson; OR Exceptional leadership [at staff’s discretion and with a full motivation e.g. captains of sport]; Member of the Executive committee of the Junior City of Cape Town Council.

[b] Dress code: Navy blue blazer with silver braiding and a leadership scroll [silver braiding] AND a navy blue tie [leadership in silver]

3.2.3 Honours Bronze

[a] Elected as an RCL member for the period of one year OR and MCL member OR recipient of the Selfless Service Award/Service to the Community Award at the annual prize giving.

[b] Dress code: Cherry red blazer with white/red braiding and a sport scroll [white plain] + bar badge

4. Cultural Activities Honours Policy

4.1 Preamble

School cultural activities are as follows: Dance, Debating, Drama, Public speaking, Choir, Christian Union, GKQ, MSA, Poetry Recitals, Sound Crew, Project 90, Yearbook [editorial committee]

4.1.1 Honours Gold

[a] Selected to participate at national level/international level

[b] Dress code: [i] Naby Blue blazer with gold braiding and a ‘Culture’ scroll [gold braiding] + bar badge [ii] a navy blue tie [culture in gold] [iii] sky blue jersey

4.1.2 Honours Silver

[a] Winner at an inter-schools festival at any of the codes listed above OR recipient of the Culture Award at the Annual prize giving.

[b] Dress Code: [i] Navy Blue blazer with silver braiding and a ‘Culture’ scroll [silver braiding] + bar badge [ii] a navy blue tie [culture in silver]

4.1.3 Honours Bronze

[a] Recipient of the Cultural Award at the annual prize giving.

[b] Recipient of an award at a once off event e.g. poetry writing competition, design indaba competition

[c] Dress Code: [i] Cherry red blazer with red/white braiding + a scroll [white plain] + bar badge

5. Olympiads

Colours will be awarded by the committee at its discretion for excellence in achievement in national/ provincial Olympiads [academic/ general knowledge].

A Gold Certificate in an Olympiad will NOT entitle the recipient to colours unless it is deemed to be of such a standard that colours are conferred e.g. TOP TEN in the country/ province.

ANNUAL PRIZEGIVING

CRITERIA & MOTIVATION FOR SPECIAL AWARDS

Grade 8 to 12:

Rotary Good Fellowship Award

Nominated with motivation by peers. The learner who has been a friend to the entire group. The one who has been the shoulder to cry on, who listens and helps those who are struggling with something, the one who is brave enough to care and not be afraid to show it.

4 ‘I’s’ Award

The four I’s are Intelligence, Involvement, Integrity and Industry. This award goes to the learner who has displayed all of the above character traits. The one who has a level of intelligence which has shown him/ her capable of problem solving and carrying out tasks without much assistance. The learner is involved in activities outside the class, not only with extra-murals or sports but who supports school functions and events. The integrity (honesty) of the person is never in question. This learner also has proven him/ herself committed to academics and has consistently embraced a level of excellence both inside, and outside of, the classroom.

Academic and Extra-Mural Excellence Award

Simply a learner who is an all-rounder. Someone who is academically committed and hard-working but someone who also plays hard and who has dedicated time and energy to sports and extra-murals at school. Excellence in sports/ extra-mural does not refer necessarily to skill but to the commitment and dedication displayed by the learner.

Selfless Service Award

For the learner/s who is/are just that: selfless. Always willing to sacrifice time to help, assisting wherever they can, staying after school whenever needed, spending time at school over weekends or during the holidays. No request seems too great.

Service to the Community Award

For the learner who has placed others above him/herself. Someone who has dedicated time and energy to assist those who are less fortunate. A learner who has been of service to the community.

The Turn-Around Award

A learner who was naughty, cheeky, difficult (a real problem child) but has managed to make a complete u-turn and has become a totally different person. The one who has really turned around and who makes teaching and learning a pleasure.

Cultural Award

The cultural life of Henshilwood is an important to us as academics and sports. This award goes to the person who has made a significant contribution to the life of culture at our school. Someone who has made culture fun and interesting and put it in the spotlight

Stolle Award for Excellence in Leadership (RCL)

This award is for a School Councillor who has displayed exceptional dedication, initiative, integrity and leadership.

Grade 12 Only:

Role Model of the Year Award

Reserved for one of the matric gentlemen. The male learner who has set an example for his peers (from Grade 8 to Grade 12). Well mannered, polite, courteous, quietly gets on with doing what he believes is right. The epitome of a gentleman.

Young Woman of the Year Award

Reserved for one of the matric ladies. A young lady of strong character, determined to succeed and who displays self-confidence. Others can learn from her tenacity.

Young Scientist of the Year Award

This award is for the learner who has an intuitive grasp of the Physical Sciences, one who is capable of lateral thinking and who is able to use an analytical ability to solve problems. One who can apply scientific theory to real-life situations.

Patrick Northcott Award

The learner who has overcome tremendous academic odds, the one who works hard on a daily basis and staff has been able to see the commitment and dedication to work, the one who never gives up, even though they do not shine academically.

Oral Communication Award

This trophy is awarded in recognition of the ability to communicate well in two official languages. Someone who is fully bilingual, well versed and articulate.

Stolle Award for Excellence in Leadership (MCL)

This award is reserved for a matric learner who serves on the School Council. The recipient has been elected by his/her peers for excellence in leadership and dedication to the school, as well as for being the embodiment of the values instilled at NHHS.

Henshilwood Award

This award is reserved for a learner who has served as a member of the MCL. One who has applied him/ herself to studies, who has participated in extra-mural activities and served in a leadership capacity within those extra-murals at school and who has also displayed a sense of integrity and commitment.

Deputy Principals’ Award (discretion of the deputies)
